ESS Ireland

The European Social Survey (ESS) is an academically driven cross-national
survey that has been conducted across Europe since its establishment in 2001.
Every two years, face-to-face interviews are conducted with newly selected,
cross-sectional samples.  The survey measures the attitudes, beliefs and
behaviour patterns of diverse populations in more than thirty nations.

The objective of the study is to offer researchers, policy makers and the
public the highest quality survey data that is comparable across countries and
time.

More than 2,000 households were selected to take part in the 11th round
of the ESS in Ireland. Fieldwork will commenced in June 2023 and was undertaken by Behaviour & Attitudes. The sample is representative of all residents of Ireland aged 15 and over.

We completed another successful data collection to build upon Ireland’s continuous participation in the ESS survey over the past twenty years. This research is supported by a grant from the Irish Research Council (IRC).

ESS Round 11 Irish data has been released on June 20th, 2024.

ESS11 IE achieved a response rate of 52.8%. Using a multistage probability sampling procedure, the first stage involved selecting 655 clusters of electoral divisions based on the number of addresses stratified by city/urban/rural classifications within regions. In the second stage, 6 addresses were randomly chosen within each primary sampling unit, and at the third stage, one individual per address was selected using the last birthday technique. Data collection was conducted through face-to-face interviews using computer-assisted personal or mobile interviewing (CAPI/CAMI). The survey was carried out by University College Dublin (UCD) from June 27, 2023, to January 3, 2024.
